To the man who calls me shitbird

There's only one person in my life that calls me shitbird (to my face at least), and it's that person's birthday today!!!

If you're wondering why this person calls me shitbird, it may be because of the fact that he had to deal with 16-year-old Shayli (the worst) and take my phone all the time and stand in the front window in his garments and wait for me to come home waaaaaaayyyy past curfew. Or maybe it's because I stole his BYU chocolate truffles all the time? Or because I always called him with favors? Okay, those last two things don't apply to just 16-year-old Shayli, but you get the idea. Lots of reasons why I could be considered the shitbird in this person's eyes!

And if you can't tell already, this "person" is my dad!

The only reason we are smiling in this photo is because we just got done saying, "SHEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIITTTTT"

Some people might think it's weird that my dad (fajia as I like to call him) calls me shitbird, but it's actually a term of endearment. At least I think it is.... dad????! Anyway, anyone who knows him, knows he's not really what you would call "a hugger" if you know what I'm saying. So calling me shitbird and giving me a little punch to the arm to let me know he's proud of me is actually pretty normal. Ha!

Anyway, HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the man who calls me shitbird! Who also happens to be  the same man that eats Cheetos with a fork + wears a jumpsuit to mow the lawn in that says "Shayli's Dad" on the back + collects opal turtles + quotes Seinfeld + orders salads at Texas Roadhouse. Most importantly, Happy Birthday to the man who has shown me what an amazing husband and dad is supposed to be like. You are truly one of a kind! There's no one else I'd rather have call me shitbird than you.

"Proud of you!" *punches arm*

Love,
SB

Love is...

Love is. . .

Falling asleep on the couch at 8:00...on a Friday night.

Giving me the last bite of your sugar cookie.

Going out of your way to bring me my keys and whistle that I forgot on my way to work.

Pretending to be interested when I tell you about work.

Completely saving the day + having a mutual love for white trash food:
Using "bob" or "bobber" as a term of endearment.

Knowing what "I'll be ready in 15 minutes" really means.

Trying your best to set the pillows how I like them when you make the bed (and not saying anything after I adjust them anyway).

Holding hands in bed every single night.

Kissing with onion breath.

Trusting me to shave the back of your neck.

Complimenting my "Shakira" eyeliner (winged eyeliner) after lots of not-so-subtle hints.

Watching Modern Family with me every night.

Having your own language that involves words like "curney,"(corner) "curter," (quarter), and "fer" (fire).

Telling me I am a "twig bi" when I am feeling my worst.

Surprising me with my favorite old fashioned cake donut for no reason at all.

Leaving your shoes and socks outside (ha!).

Giving me food instead of flowers for Valentine's Day.

The reason we celebrate today!!!

Happy Love Day to my favorite lover dover bobber!
It's crazy to think that if weren't for Valentine's Day 4 years ago, we wouldn't be here celebrating it together today! I love our love.

cleaning out my drafts box

I've been wanting to blog for a while, but haven't had anything super blog-worthy to post about (do I ever?), so... I guess this post is just tidbits of non blog-worthy things that have been sitting in my drafts box! Don't scroll too fast now! I know you're all just dying to read another bullet point post from me. Here goes...

One Tree Hill- my newest Netflix obsession (thanks to my friend Keisha). Yes, I'm quite aware that I'm about 13 years behind on that train, but holy Chad Michael Murray! And lesbihonest, Sophia Bush... is it okay if I maybe have a bigger crush on her than Chad? Look me in the eye and tell me you don't think she has the best voice! Such raspy goodness. Anyway... um... can I still keep my temple recommend after confessing all of that? But really, One Tree Hill really is just good stuff, man!

Peach Fresca- a favorite bevi in the Gourley household right now. It's just so... happy? Summer-y? Sunshine-y? Not-Winter-y? You get the idea. It's become our new little pick-me-up and we're not sorry about it (even if our future beach bods are). Oh, and I only used the word bevi because I laugh every time Chris says it.

Nivea Men's Post Shave Balm- if you watch YouTube, chances are you already know about this "face primer." For those of you who don't, you need this stuff in your life like yesterday! I've tried quite a few higher end AND drugstore face primers, and I can honestly say this has been my favorite product to prime my face with so far. For starters, it's so cheap and comes in a huge bottle (primers are usually in tiny packages and a freaking rip off!), you can get it at Wal-Mart, AND it's super moisturizing, but doesn't make you look greasy. Oh, and it smells like a dude! If you're into that sort of thing...
Just go try it, ok?

New students- I completed my first semester as a first-year teacher! ... which meant I had to say goodbye to my first group of students :( Do you remember on Friends when Monica had to break the news to Rachel that Chandler was going to move in with her, so Rachel was going to have to leave? And at first Monica was really upset that Rachel didn't even shed a tear about it because she didn't really think it was going to happen? But then Rachel realized it really was going to happen, and both her and Monica started to break down and cry and Rachel says, "It's like the ending of an era!!" Yeah, that's how that transition was. I was Monica, my student's were Rachel, and my new in-coming student's were Chandler. It really is like the ending of an era for me. I miss my first semester student's every day + get a little sad when I see them in the hall going to their new classes. Luckily, I've had lots of them come back and visit, but still! It's hard to imagine loving these new student's as much as my first ones. There is just a special place in my heart for them, you know?!

New huuurrrr- I guess I figured new students, new hair! It was just time for a change, you know Annnnnd maybe Khloe Kardashian may or may not have been a main contributor in my decision to start going blonde... I know, I know. But you can't tell me Klo Money isn't looking freaking amazing right now! Anyway, I've really had to tell myself that going blonde has to be a commitment. No switching back to dark 2 months later. Not this time. Wish me luck! And maybe pray that I quit watching E channel? Or quit following Kardashians on Insta... whichever you think I would benefit from most.

Ah, doesn't it feel so good to clean out the drafts box?

Norman "Jiggs" Sanderson

My grandpa Sanderson passed away this last Sunday.

I miss him.

Even though I miss him and will continue to miss him, it's so comforting to know that he is finally reunited with his sweetheart, grandma Sanderson. Chris and I were talking last night about how grandma and grandpa were just a pair. One couldn't (or shouldn't) be without the other--it just wasn't right! But now they are back together, and all is right again.

I'm grateful for the time I got to spend with my grandpa. I will always cherish the memories of sleeping over at my grandma and grandpa's house--kneeling down for prayer on the blue couches, watching old movies, and waking up to grandpa's ham and cheese omelettes (the only omelettes I have ever really liked) and Mickey Mouse pancakes. Now I get to cherish the most recent memories of my grandpa, which involved longer hugs and lots more kisses + always saying "Love you" multiple times before leaving.

I can't wait until the next time I see him. I think it will be very familiar to me. I picture him and my grandma just waiting together and smiling and saying "howdy!" as I approach them, and then just having that warm, calming feeling take over (something I already miss).

But until then, I can look forward to telling my future children about the amazing man that was grandpa Sanderson + keep seeing him in my dad.

I love you, grandpa! Give grandma the biggest hug for me.

I've said penis a lot this week (#healthteacherprobs)

They say you become like the 5 people you spend the most time with, so I guess that makes me an 8th grade adolescent. Yeah, I guess that makes sense seeing as how I have had to suppress so many giggles throughout this Human Sexuality unit. There's only so many times you can say "testes" and "scrotum" + see the horror on student's faces before it starts to get to you...
Luckily my student's really have been SO mature throughout this unit and not given me any problems. There were only a couple of kids that I saw on the brink of laughing, but they were able to bite their lip and pretend to cough in their sleeve so that I wouldn't have to send them to the library and make a phone call home. Besides that, my student's have been on the best behavior that I've seen all semester. Pretty sure Sex Ed is the true secret to classroom management.

It's crazy to me that there's only two weeks left this semester--I'm not ready to say goodbye to my students! I've found myself getting sad at the thought of not seeing them (most of them anyway...) anymore after this term. Then I start having the teacher thoughts like, Am I really making an impact in their lives? Are they going to remember anything from health class?! Those are the most discouraging thoughts for teachers, at least for me they are. I hope that they have learned a thing or two, and will remember Mrs. Gourley's health class!
Even though I'm not ready to say goodbye to my first group of student's, I am ready for the weekend.... and to not have to say the va-jay-jay word and other reproductive parts 100 times a day. Because I'm an 8th grade adolescent at heart, remember?

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Back to Reality

I still can't believe it's 2016! It just doesn't feel real yet! I'm thinking it's not going to feel real until I go back to work tomorrow and I have student's telling me I wrote 2015 on the board instead of 2016...

Speaking of work--I'm not ready to go back!!! I have said all break that I'm ready to go back, but now that it's finally here I'm finding myself feeling all anxious and having mini heart attacks and millions of thoughts running through my mind of things I should have done during the break need to do now. Is that normal, teacher friends?!

I will say that I am ready to be back in a normal routine and not feel like the most worthless person on the planet, though. Pretty sure the majority of my Christmas break was spent on my (now larger) bum + eating Hi-Chews, but I can't complain too much--I got a lot of Chris time! We made it out of the house a couple of times to go adventuring. And by adventuring, I mean go out to eat. Ha! But really, we did go see a few movies + we went on a hike up Battle Creek Falls and it was beautiful and made me feel like Elsa for a minute and actually consider being a "Winter person," but only for a minute, though.

Now reality is setting back in as me and Chris prepare for what I like to call the "Monday of the year" aka January aka the month we eat lots of salads and write down ways we want to be better. Anybody else? What is the secret to surviving the Monday of the year? Please let me know when you've figured it out.

Wish us luck as we head back to reality tomorrow.
Ready or not, here we go 2016!
