Norman "Jiggs" Sanderson

My grandpa Sanderson passed away this last Sunday.

I miss him.

Even though I miss him and will continue to miss him, it's so comforting to know that he is finally reunited with his sweetheart, grandma Sanderson. Chris and I were talking last night about how grandma and grandpa were just a pair. One couldn't (or shouldn't) be without the other--it just wasn't right! But now they are back together, and all is right again.

I'm grateful for the time I got to spend with my grandpa. I will always cherish the memories of sleeping over at my grandma and grandpa's house--kneeling down for prayer on the blue couches, watching old movies, and waking up to grandpa's ham and cheese omelettes (the only omelettes I have ever really liked) and Mickey Mouse pancakes. Now I get to cherish the most recent memories of my grandpa, which involved longer hugs and lots more kisses + always saying "Love you" multiple times before leaving.

I can't wait until the next time I see him. I think it will be very familiar to me. I picture him and my grandma just waiting together and smiling and saying "howdy!" as I approach them, and then just having that warm, calming feeling take over (something I already miss).

But until then, I can look forward to telling my future children about the amazing man that was grandpa Sanderson + keep seeing him in my dad.

I love you, grandpa! Give grandma the biggest hug for me.

Wedding Day Nuke

Dear blog world,

I am alive... but only just. This month has been so crazy with baby & bridal showers, helping Shelbs with wedding stuff, family parties... oh, and the usual craziness that is our lives with Chris in grad school and me teaching school. So of course, this weekend (the one weekend I haven't had something to do or somewhere to be) I got sick. The kind of sickness that kept me in the fetal position praying that I was done excreting body fluids. So there's that lovely image for you!

All complaining aside, so many blog-worthy things have happened this month! Good things! Like the fact that I went two days without diet Dr. Pepper! Fall Break (#teacherperks)! Me and Chris are selling our town home! And last but not least.. SHELBS GOT MARRIED!!! As much as I know you'd all love to hear about my experience of going two days without that dark poison I call Dr. Pepper, I'm just going to ease back into this blogging thing with a bunch of pictures from my sister's wedding festivities this past week.

Shelbs' wedding was so perfect, so laid-back, and had me scratching my head saying "hmm, why didn't I think to do that?!" Such a typical thing of me to do anytime I see Shelby do or wear anything, really. Can I be Shelbs when I grow up?!

Anyway, I'll let my pictures of Shelbs wedding week do most of the blogging for me, since I'm trying to ease back into blog world + eat solid foods. Enjoy!

Shelbs was introduced to the G-life on Tuesday! Wahoo!
Her cute wedding dinner that I failed to take more pictures at.
Just keepin' it classy between the temple and reception ha!
Shelbs had a soda bar and cookies at her reception! S'cute, huh?! Why didn't I do that!?

Congrats Mr. and Mrs. Hooley! AKA our new go-to couple!

The Sandy's Go Camping!

For the past few years my family has made it a tradition to camp on July 24th...

... in my parent's backyard. Ha!

But for some reason, my family decided that we should try REAL camping this year, like, go somewhere that there's no cell service and/or toilets that flush... so Payson Lakes it was! Which ended up being so, so fun. And I must say, for a family that never camps anywhere other than in the comfort of our parent's backyard, we did pretty dang good at "roughin' it." I mean, having your dad drive all the way home to "get more firewood" (shower) + have him bring back drinks from McDonald's + bringing your selfie stick is really roughin' it...right?! Baby steps...

Anyway, here are some highlights from Payson Lakes! Scroll, scroll, scroll!

+ FOOD FOOD FOOD AND MORE FOOD. Thanks mama Sanderson for feeding us better food than we eat at home!

+ FOOD (again). Because, there really was so much crap to eat up there. Like, I considered going on a juice cleanse when I got back because that's how much junk food we had up there.

+ My selfie stick + running out of daylight/phone battery.

+ Playing "I'm going on a trip"

+ Roasting anything and everything we could find. The most original being hi-chews with a marshmallow (don't diss it until you've tried it! Right, Mitch?!)

+ Fishing! ...and catching only one fish (by yours truly!)

+ Gagging to the point of nearly throwing up because of the bathrooms (and Evie crying because of them ha).

+ Paddle boarding/kayaking/watching Dash kayak

+ Grandpa putting Talon into "tonic paralysis" by scratching his back

+ A chipmunk eating half our loaf of bread

+ Going for a run around Payson Lakes

+ Mom making the ultimate comeback in horseballs

+ Getting rained on the first night

+ Introducing Cade to the crazy that is the Sanderson family

+ Staying up past midnight around the campfire

+ "Hup! 2, 3, 4..."

+ Dad building his own tent over his truck (+ trying to get out of it at 5:30am)

+ Grandkids playing with glow sticks

+ Being informed by the camp hosts on our last day that we were too loud and had too many people in our sites.

+ Embracing that Sanderson temper/pride and making sure to burn all of our extra fire wood so the hosts couldn't sell any of it after we left.

Yay Payson Lakes!
... see you next year?
Eh... at least our posterity can see that we did go camping somewhere besides mom and dad's backyard.

Celebrating Emily

It's crazy to think that it was only a month ago that my grandma passed away--it definitely feels longer. I miss her. A lot. Which is why I decided to finally look at some of the pictures my cousin, Cassie, took at my grandma's funeral.

I'll be honest...at first I thought it was kinda weird that my cousin was wandering around with her nice camera taking pictures of everyone and everything that day (Is that funeral etiquette?), but now I'm grateful she did, because they have provided some comfort. I love being able to look back on that day and see how much love and support my once basically orphan grandma had accumulated over her life! I also love that Cassie snapped some pictures of me and my sister with our grandpa--I will cherish those pictures forever! Which is why I decided to put those + other pictures from that day on the blog.
^^My absolute favorite picture^^

I couldn't help but be a little sad thinking about how our kids won't get to meet their great grandma Sanderson in this life, or have the pleasure of going to her house and being greeted by the twinkle in her eye, but I am excited to tell them all about her when the time comes. I can't wait to tell them that their great grandma was alive when Pearl Harbor was bombed, and that she thought about becoming a nurse once, and that she made yummy chocolate cake and that she always denied putting cool whip on her toast and most importantly, that she was a simple lady who found the most joy in living the Gospel and simply visiting with her family and friends... and the occasional trip to the D.I. :) My kids will definitely know who grandma Sanderson is and the love I have for her.

So while today may be kind of a sad anniversary, I want to make it a day of celebrating Emily! So be sure to eat an extra treat...or two... because that's what she did even though she was diabetic (she's the only person I'm okay with doing that). And if you're able, find a Shirley Temple movie to watch! And most importantly, stop and visit with someone and try to make them feel like the most important person in the world... like she did.

Emily Alice Hamill Sanderson

So, I've definitely been avoiding this post. . . mostly because every time I would try to sit down and write it, I would get a huge lump in my throat and have to suppress the big ol' alligator tears trying to escape. I thought after my grandma's funeral yesterday I would have an easier time writing, but I was wrong... the lump is still in my throat, and the alligator tears have found themselves all the way down to my neck. I've been sitting here for almost 2 hours now writing, then deleting, paragraph after paragraph because they just aren't good enough. There's so much to say about my grandma Sanderson! So many memories to share! So many things I would love to tell blog world about my grandma, but I've decided blog world doesn't need to know every little detail, every single reason I love my grandma, and every little thought I've had over the past week. Not today, at least.

However, I will say that her funeral service yesterday was perfect. The people there, the speakers, her green casket, the confetti, the wind chimes, and everyone wearing green to honor her Irish heritage--she would have loved it all! And despite it being an emotionally exhausting day, I loved it all, too.
My most favorite thing from the service was my dad's life sketch he wrote for my grandma, which is why I thought I would at least share that with blog world. My dad won't admit it, but he definitely inherited my grandma Sanderson's talent for writing poetry. So here it is. Enjoy learning a little more about my grandma from my dad.

Mom's Life Sketch
by: Kelly Sanderson

Anyone who knew my mom
For any length of time
Should understand that her life sketch
Just has to be in rhyme

It starts with a disclaimer though
I feel I really should
My poetry skills are lacking much
While hers were very good

Em’ was born in Payson there,
In Nineteen Twenty-Eight
Marie and Frank’s first child to them
January 9th, the date.

Her family lived in Marysvale
The clan remained the same
A little brother soon followed her
Edward was his name

It was here she made a lifelong friend
We thank you, Nan, for that.
The two remained so very close
And loved to talk and chat

Em’ and Ed seemed very close
Siblings at their best
A decade of togetherness
Was about to get a test.

Her mother died when she was twelve,
Her dad within the year
Orphaned, split, then fostered out,
Not much to really cheer

Mom was lucky, Ed was not
While he often ran away
The Hansen home eventually
Made Mother’s life okay

School years in Provo found
A grad of BY High
Followed by some college time
She studied at the ‘Y’

She met a handsome sailor man
Blind date initially
They were wed and from then on known
As Jiggs and M.L.E

Pleasant Grove would be their home
For most of seventy years
Ned and Melva and countless more
Would count among their peers

While in PG the message came
About her only other
Killed in battle, the Korean War
Had claimed her only brother.

So now alone, her family gone
Lucky she found dad
The two of them began their own
Too busy to stay sad

Raising Tom, Ed, Mark, and Steve
An easy task (I’m lying!)
The rest of us that followed them
Are thankful they kept trying!

Carol was born……Robynn next
Her tragic death a shame
New Year’s Day from that day forth
Was never quite the same

Sharlene and Kelly wrapped it up
Numbers seven and eight
Kelly will humbly tell you all
Eight tries to make it great.

Designing floats and posters many
Her writings such a hit
Countless toasts for weddings, plus
It showcased her great wit

She’d hold us down and tickle us
Even if tears were near
The torture only ceased when said
“I love you, Mother Dear!”

Outside the kitchen window screen
One could almost bet
That unsuspecting passers by
Most likely would get wet

You’d wheel around in time to see
Mom quietly doing the dishes
And then proclaim her innocence
Her halo set…….(She wishes!)

Our parents really supported us
In everything we tried
Wrestling, dance, and football games
Her children were her pride

She loved to go to Ladies Camp
The best of friends met there
A week of crafts and discussing things
Secrets they would share

Too many friends to mention though
They loved to just be silly
I’ll mention one, her name was Jo,
We knew her as “Mitt Millie”

Some quirky traits she also had
She’d drag us through D.I.
Each item looked at… very close
And then would never buy

The kicker though, as we look back
Pleading wouldn’t thwart her
If we were good we’d get a gift… (sigh)
A grab bag for a quarter!

And every grandchild can attest
When she sent regards
Confetti fell all over them
While opening up their cards

Later on, with kids all gone
There came a mission call
They returned, with two great friends
By the name of Mendenhall.

When Mark and Erin arranged a trip
Way across the sea
To Ireland with dad and mom
They found her family!

The orphan without anyone
So early on just found
Her Irish side so proudly now
Had relatives abound!

She really developed who we are
And might we add for laughs
We thank you now, we’re grateful for
No waist … and great big calves!

A character now our mother was
She always made life fun
She lived her life as He would want
To Emily now, “well done!”

This toast is meant for tribute, Mom
We want to make it clear
We really desire for you to know
“We love you, Mother Dear”

my "old" man

We celebrated my dad turning the big 5-0 yesterday! And I gotta tell ya, I wasn't expecting it to be such an emotional birthday. Not for me, anyway. But then again, how did I not expect to get emotional when one of my biggest heroes hit such a monumental point in his life?!

I've grown up knowing that my dad is bad-a, especially in a my-daddy-can-beat-up-your-daddy kind of way (which he can), but I kind of thought other dads were almost as cool, too. It wasn't until more recently in my life (especially now that I'm teaching) that I started to realize that not all dads are created equal. Not all dads would never miss a sporting event (including high school cheer ha), be able to help you through those boy problems in high school, or carry the train of your wedding dress all around Temple Square in a blizzard. I was one of the luckies who got a dad who did all those things + so, so much more.

Since we're not the sappiest, touchy-feely, type of family, I'll just end with this: *Dad, you are my biggest hero. You inspire me to work hard, love my spouse with everything that I have, and always be there for my future children (your grandchildren!).  Happy 50th, fajia!!!

Love,
Shay-leh
(shitbird)

A Tidbit of Tibble Fork.

...how much longer do you think I can keep incorporating the word 'tidbit' into my post titles before it gets annoying? Okay! We get it! Your blog is called A Tidbit of Love! We understand you're running out of clever post titles!

- - - - - - - - - -

We had Sanderson family pictures taken a couple weeks ago, and I must say, I'm really proud of all of us! Mostly because there was minimal tears and swear words, but also because we braved the freezing cold up at Tibble Fork AND were dealing with post-Thanksgiving chubby face (okay, maybe that was just me) (also proud of the fact that my mom got my dad to wear purple-ha! excuse me, I mean, "burgandy"). Seriously though, the grandkids did so good up there! So good in fact, that I promised them all I'd take them to the dollar store. Oh, and Chris did really good too! He barely complained + smiled normal + suggested some poses for us (as you'll see below).

We had our family friend, Brooklyn, take these photos for us. You guys! If you need pictures taken, she's your girl! She's so great and so good at what she does (click here to see her blog). I loved the candid shots she got of our family, because let's be honest, those are usually the best pictures to look at! Here are some of my favorites:

^^But seriously, how pretty is my mom?^^
^^I've never seen Chris happier in a photo of us...^^

I love my family.

p.s. After these pictures Chris informed me that we've had six photoshoots since we've been married... I think it's safe to say that he's done taking pictures with me for a while.

p.p.s. We also went to Chubby's after this--bad idea for the thighs. And my post-Thanksgiving face. Maybe I'll be joining Chris on the being done taking pictures for a while thing?
